Cambridge University Blues 60 – Warwick University 1st Team 76
Cambridge returned from the winter break and tour of Serbia with 2 tough games remaining in the league. Warwick, the top side in the division, were the opponents this Wednesday and took advantage of a lacklustre display from the Blues side.
The 1st quarter started and ended brightly with Puzovic proving unstoppable when building a 3 point Cambridge lead after 10 minutes. However, poor decision making across the team combined with the strength of the opposition meant that every mistake was punished and this was the high point of the game.
Despite being outworked and outrebounded by the away side, the Blues kept the game within touching distance for the next 20 minutes and were down a reasonable 8 points entering the crucial 4th quarter. Unlike in previous games the pressure was not applied successfully to Warwick and Cambridge didn’t mount a challenge on the league leaders at any point in the quarter. This was a hard blow for the coaching team and committee to take, as Cambridge normally leaves everything on the court regardless of the result.
With Varsity looming large in February and a must win league fixture coming up the Blues have a long way to go, and some soul searching to do, if they are to turn the season around. Good patches within the game provide some encouragement but a more sustained effort will be needed in the coming month.
