Match Report: UEA 1st

Travelling to East Anglia, the Blues needed to regain their momentum after a disappointing loss to Oxford earlier in the week. A slow start, however, gave UEA a ten point lead after the first quarter. Coach Angelo Favia devised a switching defence in the huddle, but a tremor interrupted the meeting as player Damjan Pfajfar fell to the ground in a seizure.

Fortunately, medical attention was on hand, but the former Blues’ president was rushed to the hospital. Left with eight players, the Blues began their shooting spree: Atticus Honore stroked some jumpers from the perimeter; Hugo Halferty Drochon performed post moves that can only be described by the phrase “c’est magnifique”; Richard Martin sliced to the offensive rim for some acrobatic conversions. With seconds left in regulation, a drive by Honore evened the score and the game was pushed into overtime.

As the Blues gained a thundering rhythm, foul trouble began to arise. Fouls at the beginning of overtime meant that only five players were still eligible to play. The mayhem mounted as subsequent calls left the Cambridge squad with only four. Playing a 2-2 zone against a UEA side of 5, the Blues continued to outpace their opponents. A last second “Hail Mary” shot by Leopold Parts took the game into a second overtime. Foul calls continued, however, and soon there were only three Blues left. Coach Favia instructed his remaining three players to drop back into a 1-2 zone. A technical foul against Atticus Honore for his behaviour on the bench was accompanied with yet another player foul. Richard Martin did his best to defend against three UEA offensive players while Hugo Halferty Drochon picked up the remaining two.

Despite every effort, the match-up between 2 Blues players and 5 UEA players ended unsurprisingly in UEA’s favour, 75-78.

Match Report: UEA 1st Facing a formidable UEA squad on Wednesday, the Blues started the game at a furious pace. Intensive man to man defence in the first quarter, as well as good high-low post play gave the Blues an early 13 point lead. Notable points came from Leo Parts and Hugo Halferty Drochon. Entering the game, Domantas Jankauskas contributed several offensive rebounds and points from the freethrow line. By halftime, the Blues extended the lead to 14. In the third quarter, UEA adjusted to the Blues offence, and the Cambridge team struggled to maintain their 14 point lead. Starting off the fourth quarter, Damjan Pfarrer hit a crucial three-pointer. Still UEA battled back and the point margin decreased to five. Point guard Sunith De Fonseka, hit two freethrows after a UEA foul, and centre Hugo Halferty Drochon spun around UEA’s 6’6” centre to score six more Blues points. The Blues won the game 61-54.

Match Report: Wolverhampton 1st Taking to the road for the second time this season, the Blues travelled to Wolverhampton with an incomplete squad of eight players. Missing several key posts, the Blues knew that rebounding and defence against Wolverhampton’s centres would prove crucial. Head coach Angelo Favia orchestrated a match-up zone defence which proved deadly for Wolverhampton’s offence. Early scoring from Richard Martin and Michal Kucewicz gave the Blues a first quarter lead of ten points. In the second, the Blues continued to fast break and the point’s differential increased with scoring from Leopold Parts and Christoph Mueller. Domantas Jankauskas contained Wolverhampton’s big men and the Blues led by 13 at the half. In the third and fourth quarters, Wolverhampton battled back and, with two minutes remaining, managed to regain the lead. In the final minutes, however, president Leopold Parts scored two lay-ups to seal the victory for the Blues, 51-49.
